England Test skipper Joe Root will wear Barmy Army stickers on the back of his bat for the rest of the season as a gesture of his appreciation to supporters.
It’s been a busy summer for the Three Lions camp with series against the West Indies, Pakistan, and now the Aussies, and though England fans and the Barmy Army haven’t been able to be inside the stadium to roar them on, clearly we remain at the forefront of their thoughts.
Joe approached us with the idea as a special thank you from him and the rest of the England team. They wanted to show that although we haven’t been able to be in the stands this summer they are still thinking of us and can’t wait to see us back there in the future.
The Yorkshire and Three Lions batsman will wear the stickers on his bat for the rest of the 2020 season, including the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia.
We can’t wait to see him creaming the Aussies to all parts with the Barmy Army stickers proudly on the back of his bat and it seems neither can he.
“As an England cricketer to experience the presence of the Barmy Army when we play is very special,” said Joe.
“Of late that has not been possible but even in times like these, to know there are so many loyal, cricket-mad England fans right there with us is a special effort from you all.
“I’d like to say a big thank you for your unwavering support. As a small gesture of thanks, I’ll be using the Barmy Army sticker on the back of my bat so you’re presence is on the field in a small way.
“I can’t wait to hear the countless songs and experience that 12th man effect you give us at a game in full force soon!”
Barmy Army managing director Chris Millard added: “We are delighted that Joe has offered to do this for the Barmy Army, the support from the England team for what we do is unwavering as ever and Joe wanted to show that the England team were still thinking of us, even though we can’t be there in person.
“This summer has shown us exactly what fans mean to cricket and it is clear to see for everyone exactly the colour that the Barmy Army provide to English cricket on a support and entertainment level.
“We cannot wait to get back in the stands but for now, we will enjoy watching Joe scoring runs with the Barmy Army logo proudly on the back of his bat!”
