In celebration of the skipper’s 100th Test, we’ve asked some of the Barmy Army’s best, brightest, and most committed for their favourite Joe Root memories.
In our final piece, Emma Chamberlain shares her top Root moments – on and off the field…
“One of my favourite memories of Joe off the field is when he was the best performing batsman against India at Old Trafford in August 2014.
“England won the match, with huge local support. He took so much time after the conclusion to thank the fans and have photos taken. It really made the day for my friend that tours with me, who although being a Lancastrian, was a huge admirer of Joe.
“Similarly, it was great to have a picture with him after the Ashes win at Trent Bridge in 2015. Another great moment was in South Africa in 2019 when he offered to sign everyone’s Santa hats on Christmas Day after learning that the Barmy Army Xmas Day lunch event had been a disaster.
“My favourite on-field moment of Joe is his hundred against Sri Lanka in Kandy in November 2018. In very hot conditions, he really carried the team in that test.
“He is a great example of a modern cricketer, fully committed to responsibilities on and off the field. He also relishes his relationship with the Barmy Army. Just a top bloke who deserves every success that comes his way.
“A shining example of putting in the hard work to reap the benefits. Myself and my twin sister adore him and wish him every success.”
