England captain Eoin Morgan will miss the final two matches of the ODI series against India and Sam Billings will be absent for at least tomorrow’s game due to the injuries they sustained in Tuesday’s opener.
The ECB have announced that Jos Buttler will captain the side in Morgan’s absence while Liam Livingstone is set to make his ODI debut and Dawid Malan has been brought into the squad.
Morgan and Billings sustained injuries in the field in the series opener, with the skipper splitting the webbing on his hand while fielding at extra cover and Billings suffering a bruised left collar bone diving to stop a boundary.
The pair both batted through the pain in Tuesday’s first ODI but Morgan pulled out of training today after an initial fielding drill and has been ruled out for the rest of the series.
“I had the hand re-dressed before the start of training today but it quickly became apparent that I found myself protecting the injury and getting into the wrong positions to catch the ball,” explained Morgan.
“There’s nowhere to hide on the field in international cricket these days, especially in limited-over formats so it didn’t require any great thought to make myself unavailable.
“It was a freak injury and it’s extremely frustrating but there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s now just a case of letting the cut heal. I have every confidence in Jos and the rest of the squad coping without me.”
Billings did not train today and with his injury still sore, a decision will be made ahead of the third and final ODI on Sunday as to whether he is able to play any part.
After losing the series opener, England have a chance to pull things level in the second ODI tomorrow (8am start), with the third and final match set to be played on Sunday (9am start).
