Aussie selector reveals David Warner’s opening partner for first Ashes Test

Marcus Harris is set to start the Ashes as David Warner’s opening partner, according to Australian chairman of selectors George Bailey.

The first Test at the Gabba, in Brisbane, is now less than a month away and the Aussies are still trying to piece together their side.

One position of concern for them is at the top of the order and it seems Harris is set to be the unfortunate player to partner Warner.

Speaking on Australian radio station RSN (via Sky Sports) Bailey revealed that the left-hander was set to open at the Gabba.

He said: “Harry’s had limited opportunities in the past and he’s been in and out a bit.

“We’d love nothing more than for him, hopefully, to get an opportunity to get an extended run at it.

“What we have liked is his consistency. He’s obviously been a prolific run-scorer at domestic level here, but we also love the fact he went overseas and had a great year for Leicestershire as well.”

Harris has scored 428 Test runs in 19 innings, at a measly average of 23.77, and managed just 58 runs in six innings against England in the 2019 Ashes.

23-year-old Will Pucovski was another player in the running but is likely to miss the start of the series with a concussion.

Number five is another problem position for Australia and Bailey admitted that it was still up for grabs, though you’d imagine Usman Khawaja or Travis Head will be the two options to choose from.
