Ben Stokes sends defiant Ashes message and praises England support

All-rounder Ben Stokes has claimed that England still believe despite a testing second day of the second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval and has heaped praise on the Three Lions support – both in Australia and at home in the UK.

Joe Root’s side finished the day on 17/2 at stumps after the Aussies had declared on 473/9, with both Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed undone by the difficult combination of the new pink ball and conditions under the lights.

The skipper will look to build another big partnership with Dawid Malan when play gets underway tomorrow morning and it seems there is optimism in the tourists’ camp that they can wrestle back control.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the second day’s play at the Adelaide Oval, Stokesy sent a defiant message about England’s mindset.

He said: “If you don’t believe you’re already beaten.”

The Barmy Army have been unable to travel down under in our usual numbers this winter but there is absolutely no doubt that the Adelaide Barmies did us proud today, with their singing a constant soundtrack to the day’s play.

The Brisbane Barmies deserve similar credit for their support at The Gabba as do all those backing Root’s team from the UK.

It certainly has not gone unnoticed by the England squad, as Stokesy outlined at stumps.

He said: “We’ve seen a lot of the support we’ve been getting on social media from everyone back in England and the guys who have been supporting us here in Australia have been absolutely phenomenal.

“It’s incredible wherever we go. You hear them even though they’re outnumbered and there are people are staying up through the middle of the night to watch us from afar in the bars and stuff.

“That’s incredible to see. Obviously, the first Test didn’t go well and Australia are ahead at the moment but we know back home we’ll be getting as much support as we always do and for us, it’s about letting them know we really appreciate it.”

There’s a long way to go in the Test and the series, and we’re backing Stokesy and the rest of the side to fight their way back into the game on day 3!
