The rousing receptions from Ben Stokes’ last ODI for England

Ben Stokes played the last of his 105 ODIs for England yesterday at Chester-Le-Street and though Jos Buttler’s side were beaten by South Africa, there were still plenty of memorable moments as the talismanic all-rounder bowed out of the format.

The new Test skipper announced on Monday that he was set to retire from the 50-over game as it has become “unsustainable” for him to play all three formats due to the unrelenting international schedule.

Stokes finished with 2924 runs at 38.98 and 74 wickets in his 105 games in the format but those numbers don’t do his game-changing ability justice.

He is a player capable of making the impossible possible and did it time after time – though no innings proved that better than his match-winning 84 in the 2019 World Cup final.

His home ground in Durham played host to his final ODI and even the soaring temperatures were not going to stop the Chester-Le-Street crowd from showing their appreciation to a player that has given so much for England in the format.

Stokes received a rousing reception when he came down the steps and into the middle…

There was also a special rendition from the Barmy Army…

But the loudest applause of the day was saved for after he was dismissed as they said goodbye to him in ODI cricket…

There will be plenty more great moments in Test and T20 crickets but it is fantastic that England supporters got their chance to say thank you yesterday at Chester-Le-Street.

Thank you Stokesy!
