Ollie Robinson targets South Africa series after eye-catching return

Ollie Robinson is back doing what he does best and targetting a Test return against South Africa next month.

The England seamer was back in action yesterday with Sussex as he continues his recovery from a back injury and produced an eye-catching display at Trent Bridge.

Robinson took 4 for 44 on day 1 of his side’s County Championship Division Two match against Nottinghamshire – removing the top four and looking back to his best as the hosts were dismissed for 240.

First, Hameed Haseeb was undone by one that hooped back in…

Then, Ben Duckett was caught in the leg side…

Joe Clarke was the next to go, tickling one through to James Coles behind the stumps…

And finally, Ben Slater got an absolute snorter to send him back to the pavilion for 55…

The last few months will have been a frustrating period for Robinson, not least because he’ll no doubt be desperate to get involved in the BazBall revolution, but judging from what we saw yesterday he is back fit and firing.

He may have some batting to do today as Sussex will resume on 94 for 5 – so we could see him tee off as he looks to send a message to Ben Stokes and Brendan McCullum.

England are back in Test action against South Africa midway through August and Robinson has revealed he is targetting that for his international return.

He told Sussex media yesterday: “Hopefully, play this game and there is a Lions game in a couple of weeks as well so try and play that.

“The South Africa series is pretty quickly after that so I’m hoping that two decent games and I’ll be in the mix to get selected.”
