England have named their 14-strong squad for the first two Tests against South Africa later this month, at Lord’s and Emirates Old Trafford, with Ollie Robinson back involved after recovering from injury.
A back issue kept Robinson out for the New Zealand series and one-off India Test but the 28-year-old returned in style for Sussex last month – finishing with figures of 9 for 104 in their County Championship match against Nottinghamshire.
The full squad is as follows: Ben Stokes (Durham) (c), Jimmy Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Jack Leach (Somerset), Alex Lees (Durham), Craig Overton (Somerset), Matthew Potts (Durham), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Ollie Robinson (Sussex) and Joe Root (Yorkshire).
England will hope to maintain their 100% record under Ben Stokes and Brendan McCullum when they host the Proteas later this month.
The three-match series will begin at Lord’s (17/08-21/08) before moving to Emirates Old Trafford (25/08-29/08) and concluding at the Oval (08/09-12/09).
ECB Men’s performance director Mo Bobat said the squad had been selected with “continuity in mind”.
He explained: “After an excellent start to the summer under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, we’re looking forward to an exciting Test series against a strong South Africa side.”
Bobat added: “It’s good to get Ollie Robinson back in the mix after his recent injury. He will continue his progress by playing for the Lions against South Africa in a four-day match at Canterbury next week.”
It has also been confirmed that Jonny Bairstow will miss the start of The Hundred to rest and prepare for the series.
