Five Memorable Moments from Ashes Tours Down Under

It’s the biggest one of the lot – nothing quite compares to an Ashes series Down Under. Despite results not quite going our way in recent years, we still have a whole host of memorable moments:

Winning in 2010/11

Where else can you start? Cricket came home thanks to Strauss, Cook and Co. If you chat with long-standing Barmy Army members, you’ll do well to find one that doesn’t have this tour on the top of their list. The Chef scored bucketloads of runs, the Aussies left the grounds early and the sprinkler head dance became a thing. What a time.

The Bashes

Every Ashes, the Barmy Army take on their opposite number in a fan contest known as the ‘Bashes’. Each series travels around the country with us and receives amazing turnouts. We always raise money for charities having supported the Broad Appeal for MND, the PCA and the Ruth Strauss & Jane McGrath foundations most recently.

Take The Urn Home

There’s many a classic Barmy tune that has been written on Aussie shores. Nothing quite compares though to ‘Take the Urn Home’, a true modern day great. ‘Soooooo, hoist up the John B sail!’

Christmas Day & the Boxing Day Test

Our Christmas Day lunch in Melbourne is the stuff of legends. A packed room of like minded cricket fans singing Barmy carols and eating turkey. Then wake up to one of the biggest Tests in the calendar – the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

The start of the Barmy Army

Although the Aussies rightfully get on our nerves, we also have a lot to thank them for – Kylie Minogue & some decent wine to name a couple. But in 1994 when the press dubbed crazy England fans a ‘Barmy Army’ for continued support in the face of a loss, we were born! Paul Burnham, Dave Peacock and Gareth Evans dashed to the t-shirt shop in Adelaide to get ‘Atherton’s Barmy Army’ printed and the rest as they say is history.
