The last time England played in Pakistan – back in 2022 – I travelled with the Barmy Army to Rawalpindi to witness an incredible Test Match. The Three Lions had already won the series after two remarkable performances in Karachi and Multan respectively, but there was still so much excitement around the third Test given a historic white-wash was on the cards.
In the third and final Test, England scored a record 506/4 on Day One and went on to win a tight match by 74 runs. Joe [Root] was the only player in the top five not to score a hundred, but it was an outstanding batting performance from England.
England became the first test team to complete a 3-0 whitewash in Pakistan with their eight-wicket victory in the third and final match in Karachi. It was an incredible performance from start to finish from every single player.
I particularly enjoyed the people in Pakistan. Everyone was so grateful that we had visited their country, which was in political turmoil at the time. The locals were incredibly helpful throughout our tour and went above and beyond to help in any way they could.
During the tour, security was ‘presidential level’ throughout and travel was restricted as a result. Despite this, it was still clear to see that Pakistan is a beautiful country with incredible scenery and historic monuments.
Moreover, the atmosphere in Pakistan was electric inside the ground. It was a bit like watching Tendulkar in India; the ground would fill up to watch Babar Azim batting, but then would empty once he was dismissed.
The atmosphere away from the ground was also good, too. As previously mentioned, the people of Pakistan were grateful that so many England fans had travelled to their country to watch the cricket – they remained positive even after losing 3-0!
If you haven’t been to Pakistan, my advice would be to make the effort to go. It is very unlike India or Sri Lanka. Each has its own unique characteristics. A Test match in Pakistan is certainly one for the bucket list.
