England’s Test tour of Pakistan in 2022 marked a historic return for the English team, playing their first Test series in the country since 2005. It was a three Test tour held in Rawalpindi, Multan, and Karachi, with England managing a series whitewash for the first time ever in Pakistan. It was the first time ‘BazBall’ had been tested overseas. Many curries were had, many runs were scored and it was an all round belter of a tour!
The first Test in Rawalpindi set the tone for England. Batting first, England posted a mammoth total of 657 – with an outrageous 500 scored on Day One. Pakistan responded strongly and it wasn’t until a bold declaration from Stokes that a result looked likely on an increasingly dying pitch. With the sun setting and one wicket required, up stepped Jack Leach and with moments till the end of the match England snatched a famous victory.
In between Test matches, the group visited Lahore and it’s iconic mosque sites. As well as that, there was also a trip to the Wagah Border crossing. If you aren’t in the know, the crossing ceremony is a daily military practice between India and Pakistan characterised by an elaborate and synchronised display of marching, high kicks, and aggressive posturing by soldiers from both nations. It’s very entertaining but equally fascinating as it’s one of the only safe points of crossing between the two countries. After a few more delicious curries, it was onto the next match.
In the second Test in Multan, England faced a tougher challenge. Both first innings pretty much cancelled each other out. After setting a target of 355 runs for Pakistan, Woody’s pace and aggression were pivotal in breaking through Pakistan’s batting lineup. As the hosts closed in on the total, Ollie Robinson managed to pick off the last couple of wickets sparking amazing scenes as England won the series. We were lucky enough to have a full stadium tour following the match before heading off to Karachi the next day.
After a relaxing couple of days in Pakistan’s largest city, it was time to attempt the whitewash in Karachi. 18-year-old Rehan Ahmed made sure we would be heading home singing 3-0 with a historic effort becoming the youngest debutant to take a five-wicket haul for England in Test cricket. Cue celebrations back in the hotel which we were sharing with the team before everyone departed back to England for Christmas.
Overall, it was a resounding success, both on and off the field. It was truly amazing to be back in the ever interesting and hyper-friendly Pakistan and to witness a record breaking series for England.
