This article was written during the 2022 Test Tour to Pakistan by Chuck Adolphy who was at all 3 Tests.
What was it really like following the England Test team in Pakistan for the first time in 17 years? No superlatives will really do it justice so instead here is a list of 10 things to expect when touring Pakistan.
- The people are some of the most friendly in the whole world
Pakistan is referred to as the land of hospitality for a very good reason. From the doorman at your hotel to the lunch server at the cricket – no one can do enough for you.
2. The food is delicious
With Indian takeaways being very much a staple for many of us back in the UK, Pakistani cuisine has clearly been overlooked by us Brits. It really shouldn’t have. The biryani in Karachi will make your local curry house look amateur. The famous ‘Sohan halwa’ in Multan you’ll end up having to sneak back in your luggage. You’ll have enough curry for a lifetime but certain meals will live long in the memory.
3. Pakistani cricket fans are SUPER knowledgeable
Cricket is number one in Pakistan. Everywhere you move, you’ll see Babar Azam on advertising hoardings and locals asking for predictions. They’re no mugs either and will enjoy a lively debate on the day’s proceedings. The grounds fill up slowly throughout the day to a crescendo mid-afternoon. If this coincides with the aforementioned Babar walking out to the crease, the noise will reverberate in your ears when you’re in bed that evening.
4. You can have a quiet beer or two
Although the vast majority of Pakistanis do not drink alcohol for religious purposes, there is still access to the odd drink or two. At the cricket grounds, alcohol is not for sale. Murree Brewery is the only manufacturer of beer, gin and whisky in the country and is generally sold in ‘permit rooms’ to consume in your own lodgings. Some of the bigger hotels might have a bar as well. Whilst this is a possibility, it’s integral to respect the beliefs of your hosts and not expect to be partying all the time. You’ll save your pocket anyway and wake up with a fresh head and a cuppa at the cricket!
5. You will be given a lot of things because you are a guest
A sort of extension to point number one but don’t be shocked when you’re practically told off for attempting to pay for things! It verges on the embarrassing at times but Pakistanis take hospitality very seriously. You will be made to feel welcome everywhere you go. I popped to the local pharmacy to buy some meds one evening where the pharmacist insisted I did not pay as I was a guest!
6. You will feel safe
Despite what everyone might tell you, during our tour of Pakistan we all felt very safe. Security efforts around the cricket were outstanding with lots of checks as you entered the ground. Locals will want to make you feel at ease too and 200+ fans returned safely last time with no issues.
7. You will take many a selfie
17 years is a long time (unless you’re Jimmy Anderson). The excitement with fans back combined with the mutual love of cricket makes travelling fans virtual celebrities out in Pakistan. You will be asked for plenty of selfies and will make just as many new friends!
8. You can travel safely to Pakistan as a woman
A whole host of female travellers came with us in 2022 and reported zero problems with how they were dealt with by authorities and locals. They all had an amazing experience and most are looking to re-book for 2024!
9. You might have a dodgy tummy or two!
Traveller’s diarrhoea is not a myth. The change in diet to one that predominantly revolves around curry does tend to affect some people. Fear not though, a bottle of hand sanitiser goes a long way and your body will adapt!
10. You will have one of the most amazing experiences of your life
Pakistan has it all. Beautiful landscapes, mouthwatering food and the friendliest of people. If it’s not already on your bucket list as a place to go and watch cricket, it should jump right up at the top. If you join us in 2024, you’re in for a treat – register your interest here.
