With the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA just around the corner, let’s look back on the T20 World Cup in 2010, where England claimed victory at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. It was a Barmy Army tour to remember from watching Captain Collingwood hit the winning runs, soaking up the sun on Turtle Beach, and a few too many rum punches.
“Special, just really special. Special moment personally for myself and they are memories I will never ever forget. The team, how we celebrated, the nights out that we had, the drunkenness so you might have a medal you’re a world cup winner but for me it’s the memories that I will never ever forget”.

England will play their first World Cup match against the ‘Auld Enemy’ at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. There are not many places with a better atmosphere in world cricket than the Kensington Oval, so to watch the blokes from way up north take on the current champions, it doesn’t get much better than that! One thing for sure is that England will look to play aggressively and smash the ball around the park. The T20 World Cup in 2010 was where England’s white-ball revolution started. Paul Collingwood led the men to the West Indies with an entertaining brand of cricket on the field and plenty of fun-filled adventures off-field in Barbados. Jos Butler will be looking to repeat the same efforts in the upcoming World Cup with the same squash-buckling brand of cricket.
“Colly (Paul Collingwood) played a huge part in terms of how we got the best out of the players. He basically said look I want you to go out there and whack it, as many fours and sixes in the first six overs as you can. It’s amazing when you get that you don’t think about else, and you go out there and smack it.”

After Scotland, 4 days later, England will stay in Bridgetown and play against Australia. A repeat of the final in 2010, where England lifted the trophy and famously joined the Barmy Army in the Harbour Lights Bar for a night of celebrations that both players and fans remembered. Every England player, the Barmy Army and the locals were in Harbour Lights, apart from one man…
“The bouncer didn’t believe that Tredders (James Tredwell) was a cricketer, and we were stood outside trying to google him to show the bouncer that he was part of the team. We get him a wristband in the end, but it was great fun. Harbour Lights is fun at the best of times after winning a world cup I think we were all in shock a bit, but it was great fun.”
Luke Wright on ‘The Shackles Are Off’ Podcast.
Although Luke Wright had to convince the Harbour Light’s bouncer off the 67 international white ball wickets that James Tredwell took, at least he remembers what events took place on the World Cup winning night, which the same cannot be said for Tim Bresnan…
“What was it like to win a World Cup in Barbados, celebrations alright?”
“Unbelievable”.
“Free bar isn’t it at Harbour Lights”.
“Do you know what I can’t remember buying a drink so it must have been. I don’t know, people were offering me to buy them. I’m not too sure whether or not it was free.”
Tim Bresnan on ‘The Shackles Are Off’ Podcast.’
It was a tour that the Barmy Army and players look back on with fond memories. It was where Luke Wright blossomed into a white-ball great, and player of the tournament Kevin Pietersen cemented his legacy as one of the best batsmen that England has ever seen. The Barmy Army had a great time exploring what the marvellous country has to offer and spending time with the England boys after a memorable win. It was so good that Luke Wright likes to mention it at any opportunity…
“Yeah, I try and talk about it for at least an hour a day to all the lads, but they don’t listen anymore but no I mean it is incredible. To win it in Barbados and have the fun we had out there as well, It was nice because we were with all the Barmy Army fans mixing in which made it even more special. To beat Australia in the final, you couldn’t ask for anything better than that.”
