Simon Finch (Finchy), the trumpeter for the Barmy Army, has been announced as the latest addition to the World Snooker Championship starting at the Crucible in Sheffield on the 20th of April. In an unprecedented move, the snooker’s showpiece event will be louder than usual with Finch expected to wheel out Barmy Army classics whilst the balls go down.
The World Snooker Association (Matchroom Sport) have been looking at ways to add to the entertainment and here’s what you can expect if you’re heading to Yorkshire at the end of the month:
- Jerusalem after the first break-off
- The Great Escape when a player manages to get out of a snooker
- Instead of ‘4 more to the Engerland’ expect ‘5 more to Ding Junhui’ for example, when a player sinks a colour
- Chants of “Oh Ronnie Ronnie” to the “Jimmy Jimmy” theme
Chris Millard, Managing Director of the Barmy Army, has been speaking about the innovative move,
“As an organisation, our central goal has always been to maximise the enjoyment of sport for all. The Barmy Army trumpet has been integral to lighting up cricket grounds for 20 years and snooker has always been an obvious next move for us. Having grown up in Sheffield, I can’t wait to get down to the Crucible and see Finchy light up the place.”
Barry Hearn – Chairman of Matchroom Sport – added,
“The Barmy Army know how to get an atmosphere going. We can’t wait to see what they can bring to the Worlds and the Crucible is going to be like you have never seen it.”
The World Snooker Championships are from Saturday, 20 April 2024 to Monday, 6 May 2024 at the Crucible, Sheffield.
