After five Tests full of thrilling action, the 2023 Men’s Ashes Series is unfortunately now over and what a series it has been! We weren’t quite able to regain the urn this time around but the boys still did us proud coming from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 series draw. The series has been full of memorable moments on and off the field so here are our top 10 moments of the 2023 Men’s Ashes Series.
10. Warner Becomes Broad’s Bunny
Warner and Broad would face each for the final time this summer and once again, unsurprisingly, it was Broad who would come out on top. In the first innings of the first test at Edgbaston, Broad bowled Warner for just 9 runs and would then go on to dismiss the Aussie opener in both innings at Headingley. This meant that Broad dismissed Warner 17 times in his career, which is the joint 3rd most amount times a batter has been dismissed by a bowler.

9. The Party Stand Sing Along with Finchy at Tea
Throughout the series our trumpeter, Finchy, has kept the crowd going to provide England with the 12th man they deserve. Not only has he been doing this during play but he’s also been providing the atmosphere during the tea breaks as well! A particular highlight was when 8,500 spectators in the party stand at Old Trafford joined in with ‘Oh Jimmy Jimmy’ to serenade the GOAT on his home ground.
8. Wood and Woakes get England Over the Line at Headingley
Headingley has been the home to many memorable England Ashes victory’s over the years and 2023 would be no different. Going into the test 2-0 down, England needed to win to keep the series and Ashes hopes alive. After the pair starred with the ball, Wood and Woakes found themselves together at the crease with the score 230/7 with England still needing 21 runs to win. Despite all the pressure of an Ashes series on the line the pair showed absolutely no nerves to secure England a 3 wicket win!
7. Bairstow Carries a Protestor Off the Pitch
On the first morning of the second test at Lord’s, a protestor got onto the field and interrupted play. ‘Bouncer Bairstow’ took matters into his own hands when he grabbed one of the protestors and carried them off the field. His heroics saved the wicket from damage and showed his importance as the team’s head of security.

6. Roots Catch Off Wood to Dismiss Labuschagne at The Oval
On the second day of the final test Labuschagne was showing a lot of resistance and proving difficult for the England attack to dislodge and the Aussies looked set to make it through to lunch unscathed for the session. This was until a moment of magic from Root in the slip cordon after Wood found Labuschagne’s outside edge with Root taking a blinding one handed diving catch to his left. An absolute stunner!

5. Barmy Bingo
For the first time this year we ran our Barmy Bingo events, taking the event to each of this years Ashes cities. These events were a great mix of traditional bingo and mass cricket singalongs. We hope you enjoyed them as much as we enjoyed running them!
Did you miss out? Don’t worry we’ll be running further Barmy Bingo events across the summer alongside England’s white-ball fixtures – register your interest here be the first to secure your tickets!
4. Crawley’s First Ball of the Series
There was a lot of excitement and anticipation heading into this years Men’s Ashes series, with some even questioning whether England would continue to play the exciting brand of Test cricket we have seen the past twelve months in an Ashes series. Zak was very quick to put those doubts to bed by dispatching the first ball of the series for 4, lifting the roof off the Hollies stand. This would set the tone for the way he and the rest of the team would play for the rest of the series.
3. Crawley’s Ton at Old Trafford
The first ball of the series wasn’t the only moment of note for Crawley, who enjoyed a very impressive Ashes series. He finished the series as England’s leading run scorer with 480 runs with his highlight being 189 off just 182 balls, a truly scintillating innings!
Come see Zak and the rest of the test side take on India this winter
2. Stokesy’s Ton at Lords
The stumping of Bairstow performed by Alex Carey on the final day of the second test was one of the most controversial and talked about moments of this years Men’s Ashes series. However what followed this incident was an onslaught by the skipper on the Australian bowling attack, bringing back memories of THAT innings at Headingley in 2019. Even though it wasn’t quite enough this time, Stokesy’s 155 will still go down as one of the great modern Ashes innings.
1. Broad Farewell at the Oval
When Broady announced his retirement mid way through the final test, we knew he was bound to have one last say in an Ashes test. It started with the bat with the ‘Nighthawk’ hitting his final ever ball in cricket into the stands for 6 and finishing 8 not out. Then with the ball, with England still needing 2 wickets to stop Australia from achieving their first series victory in England since 2001, Broady would take the final 2 wickets in typical Stuart Broad fashion. Around the wicket to the left hander and getting an edge through to the keeper. A fairytale end for a fairytale career.
The Barmy Army would like to say thank you to Broady for everything he has done throughout his career. He has provided English cricket supporters with entertainment and some of the best memories that will stay with us forever. Whether that be his leg pumping spells, celebappeals, being the ‘Nighthawk’ with the bat or just his general on-field antics, there will never truly be a cricket like Stuart Broad ever again. Thank you Stuart, enjoy your retirement!
The 2023 Men’s Ashes series will go down as one of the best and most entertaining series in living memory. England’s attacking brand of cricket, the contestant ebb and flow of who’s been on top in each match and the controversies dotted throughout the series has made each game edge of the seat viewing. It will be a series still talked about in the years to come with people on both sides arguing why they think they deserve to win the series but something we can all agree on is we wish we could do it all again.
