In January we will be returning to the subcontinent as we take on the Test world number ones, India, in a five match Test series and our tour packages will be soon going live! To get you excited we are going to take a trip down memory lane to look back at some of England’s most memorable moments in previous Test series in India in recent times.
A Star is Born- Nagpur 2006
England travelled to India in 2006 for a three match Test series and for the opening game of the series skipper, Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, decided to hand an Test debut to 22 year old Essex opener Alistair Cook. The rest is history. Cook went on to make 60 and 104* in that game and of course would then go on to become England’s all time leading run scorer in test cricket. ‘Century on debut what a find….’

KP Shines in Second Test – Mumbai 2012
England arrived in Mumbai chasing the series after losing the opening Test in Ahmedabad. Bowling first, England bowled India out for 327 and found themselves 68-2 when Pietersen came to the crease. In typical fashion, KP came out and played a counter attacking innings against India’s high quality spin attack to score 186 off 233 deliveries.
Just like KP, we know this England side will take the attack to the India spinners and you shouldn’t miss out on seeing it live, register your interest here.
England put India in a Spin- Mumbai 2012
Staying with the second Test in Mumbai in 2012, England took an 86 run lead into the second innings. After a steady start from the Indian openers, Cook quickly resorted to having both of his frontline spinners, Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar, on at the same time. India’s batters would struggle to have an answer for either of them with Panesar taking 6-81 and Swann 4-43 helping to skittle India for 142. England went on to the win match by 10 wickets, levelling the series 1-1 with 2 games to go.
England Secure Series Win – Nagpur 2012
A Test series away in India is widely considered to be one of the toughest places for a team to go and win a series away from home. England went to Nagpur knowing that a draw would secure their first test series win in India for almost 30 years. While the game itself didn’t live long in the memory, hundreds from Trott and Bell and then wickets for Anderson and Swann was enough to earn a draw helping to secure a famous series victory. Oh and a certain Joe Root made their debut in this Test….

Hameed Battles Through Injury– Punjab 2016
When England returned to India four years later they struggled to recreate the success of 2012. However one of the bright sparks of that tour was nineteen year old opener, Haseeb Hameed. During the third Test he suffered a broken finger while batting during the first innings, which he would eventually require surgery on after that test. Despite this injury Hammed still came out to bat in second innings and went on to make 59 not out. An innings of serious grit!
Root Hits 200 in 100th Test – Chennai 2021
In 2012 he ‘had made his Test debut on a dustbowl in Nagpur’ and by the first test of the 2021 series Joe Root was celebrating his hundredth test match for England. Rooty marked this occasion by smashing 218, the highest score ever made by a player in their hundredth Test and the only player to currently to hit a two-hundred in their hundredth Test match.
Belt out Rooty’s chant in the stadium or at one our of tour events, such as Barmy Bingo, which will be running throughout the tour. Learn more about Barmy Bingo here
Jimmy’s Famous Over- Chennai 2021
England set India 420 to win in the final innings of the first Test in Chennai. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli were both going along nicely with the hosts looking to bat out the final day to secure a draw so Root decided to chuck the ball to veteran seamer, Jimmy Anderson. Jimmy went on to bowl one of the best overs of reverse swing in the history of the game, bowling Gill and Rahane with unplayable deliveries. This over proved why Jimmy is the master of swing in ALL conditions.

The challenge of taking on India in their own conditions will be something this England Test side will look thrive on as they have with every other challenge which been thrown at them since Baz and Stokesy took over.
